What Happened?
On January 30, 2024, the European Commission announced its investigation of leading tire manufacturers. 6 of the world's largest tire manufacturers are being investigated and accused of agreeing to artificially raise and fix the prices of new replacement tires for passenger cars, vans, trucks, and buses.
In fact, car and light truck tire prices rose some 21.4% between 2021 and 2023, more than 70% above core inflation. This alleged price-fixing scheme would have resulted in US consumers paying more for new tires than they rightfully should have.
