John Libra is a partner in Korein Tillery’s Chicago office. His practice is focused on complex civil litigation, and he has over 15 years of experience at the trial and appellate level in a wide range of state and federal cases, including cases brought under state consumer fraud acts, ERISA, RESPA, and the securities laws.

Over the past decade and a half, John has been deeply involved in developing cases, leading cases though the pretrial process, and preparing and presenting cases at trial. In 2009, John led Korein Tillery’s team representing a group of airline pilots in a class action suit against their union alleging a breach of the duty of fair representation in connection with the termination of the pilots’ pension plan and the union’s allocation of funds. Shortly before trial, the defendants agreed to a settlement believed to be one of the largest – if not the largest – recovery in a breach of fair representation case. In 2013, he tried two class action cases with Steve Tillery contesting the legality of “attorney agent” programs operated by two prominent title insurance companies in Illinois, and seeking to recover the title insurance companies’ payments of hundreds of millions of dollars in alleged kickbacks. More recently, he has been a member of Korein Tillery’s trial team preparing for a groundbreaking trial concerning the harms caused by exposure to toxic chemicals.

John also has expertise in financial litigation involving investment products like residential mortgage-backed securities (“RMBS”). Over the past five years, John has been leading Korein Tillery’s efforts on behalf of a federal government agency to recover against RMBS trustees responsible for overseeing billions of dollars of securities. He has also been actively involved in advising investor clients about recovery opportunities, including initiating numerous mortgage repurchase or “putback” cases to force large banks to buy back defective mortgage loans.
